Wedding reception ideas to keep the bride from going crazy organizing the reception. Every bride wants her reception to be unique and memorable long after the day is over. Here are some ideas to keep the guests talking about what a great time they had for years to come.
1. Plan a Theme: Theme weddings are all the rage and can be a lot of fun to plan and organize. Having a single theme woven through all your wedding plans from the invitations and decorations to the food and favors is a great idea. You can have something unique like a Victorian theme wedding and then organize a masquerade ball for the reception. Play a waltz, have the guests dress in ball gowns and tailcoats and hand out Victorian favors as well. The reception will be a huge success for sure!
2. Hire professional entertainers: A very exotic idea that can leave your guests completely riveted. Depending on the kind of mood you want to set for your wedding hire a group of salsa dancers and get them to shake a leg. They can even draw all your guests on the dance floor and give some impromptu dance lessons to all. Optionally hire a capella group or some singing waiters to perform during the cocktail hours.
3. Lay out a dessert buffet: This has to be the most delicious one that will leave your guests smacking their lips in delight! Choose a selection of 20-30 different desserts and lay out a dessert buffet. Creme brulee, chocolate dipped strawberries, chocolate fondues, rocky road ice cream, your mother’s famous brownies and even the neighbor’s scrumptious cheesecake. Everything goes! This need not become an expensive affair. Simply ask the women in the wedding party to bring a dessert each and sponsor the wedding cake yourself.
4. Picture this – A Photo booth: This is great only if your families have a great sense of humor and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. You will save a fair amount of money on the wedding photographs and can use that money to set up the photo booth instead. After the wedding create a scrapbook of all the photos taken. A superb wedding memoir for the years to come. Also, you can send the guests their photographs along with the thank you notes. They’ll appreciate the gesture too.
5. Include local lores: If you are having a reception at a destination or having a lot of out of town guests, try and include some local traditions in your reception party. It can be a drink, a food, a tradition, some favors or even local forms of entertainment. Everyone enjoys learning about new cultures and your guests will be talking about it for weeks to come.
6. Invite an artist: A superb idea that doesn’t cost the earth! Scout the local art clubs and find a budding artist who can draw on the spot – in watercolors, pastels or even pencil sketches. Then get him or her to come to the wedding reception and create pictures of the party as in times before the camera was invented. You can also commission the artist to do portraits of guests and then hand them out as favors.
7. Have a wine tasting event: Splurge on a series of wines including local wines, merlots, reds and white wines and of course champagne. Invite the guests to sample wines from your ‘collection’ or ‘cellar’ and indulge their senses. You can skip all other alcoholic drinks with this wine spread on show. This is pretty extravagant so only go for it if you have the budget.
